What is LINK?
LINK is the time that all juniors at Animas apply for and attend internships with a person. We do this with the help of a mentor (in my case, Janae Hunderman), who guides us through the long process of searching for the right careers and applying for a related internship. The internships themselves take place over the course of three weeks.
The Business I Interned
I interned at the local marketing company, Ballentine, who work closely with The Durango Herald. There, I learned all about how their business works. They have all sorts of different jobs -- programmers, digital artists, social media managers, photographers -- that work together to innovate beautiful marketing strategies for their clients.
The Project
My little role at Ballentine was to basically manage their YouTube channel. For three weeks, I went through Ballentine's advertisements and made them prettier, providing descriptions, improved thumbnails, tags and other adjustments.

Reflection
- Discuss skills and abilities coming in to LINK that were most useful (with specific example)
- Discuss the most important skills developed during LINK (with specific example)
- Share how you grew through shortcomings or challenges encountered during LINK
- Argue for your importance within the organization and make a case for the mentor to accept high school interns in the future
- Describe how the internship experience has helped you plan for next steps for college and/or career readiness
As for skills I developed during the internship, I grew greatly when it came to effective communication. Often, my job required speaking to others I was working with, and it was up to me to confront them and ask for their help. This also required being able to communicate quickly and efficiently, which I was able to learn and do over the course of my internship.
While the people working at Ballentine have more skills and experience than I, it was very helpful for them to have me working on something they've neglected for a while. When I was told what my project was, they said it was something they've been putting off for months. I was doing something no one else was willing to do, which made me feel like I was doing the business a great service by simply working at the job I was assigned.
Walking away from my internship at BCI, I am happy to have had this experience under my belt. Ballentine is a fairly large and important business, so I'm happy to have this on my resume. With that said, I don't believe having worked there will significantly contribute to college or my future career. I am much more interested in the arts, and I was hoping to have done a thing or two relating to photography or filming at Ballentine. Unfortunately, these things never happened, so I will be moving on with only a decent experience working with great people.
